Chapter Eleven

Finding another sample of  the vetch consumed Calpurnia to such a degree that she actually contemplated running away from home if she could not find one.  She said, "Never had I felt so wretched" about not labeling the jar with the location of the first sample.  Why was this so distressing and so important for her?  Please be specific, using examples from the text, to explain your thinking.

  1. I think this was so distressing because she couldn't find another sample for the vetch, and she got mad at herself for not putting the lable of the location where she found it. It was so important to her because on pg.158 last paragraph it says,"Do you remember," he said," the hairy vetch that we found a while back? The posible mutant?" It had been an extremly boring plant, but I remembered it. "Can you find it for me?" he said. "I think it's still here somewhere.I haven't had time to press it." Here Granddaddy was asking her for it and that is why it was so important to her.

  3. I think that not labeling the location of where she found the mutant was so important because to find the plant, she would need the location to find the plant to see if it was a mutant or just a normal plant. I know that this is why because on page 161 it said, "And there, right under "mootant", where I'd always marked the location the way that grandfather had taught me, was... nothing."

  4. I agree with Colden in the fact that the hairy vetch was very important and that she didn't want to disapoint her grandfather. Also if you're pressing a flower it means to leave a print of the flower.

  5. I think that not labeling the was very important because since she didn't label the jar she would not be able to find the plant or find out if it was a mutant or just a normal plant. If it was a mutant and nobody else had found it before they could have made a rare discovery and they could have become famous if the plant could be used as a medicine.

  6. I think it was because she thought that her grandfather wouldn't forgive her for loosing a specimen that he thought was a new species. And she was so distressed because her and her grandfather had a bond on this one thing and she thought hat she ruined it.

  7. All really good thoughts, but I think the the root of it was Calpurnia's not wanting to fall short of her grandfather's expectations.
