Chapter One
Based on what you read in chapter one, what kind of relationship does Calpurnia have with her grandfather? Please provide evidence from the text to support your thinking.
Calpurnia doesn't have a very good relationship with her grandfather because he sits in his laboratory or library all day and never really socializes or sees his relatives because he never leaves the laboratory or the library.
I agree with Sebastian, because on page 11 it says,"As a last resort ,I rounded up my courage and went out to my grandfather's laboratory. I pushed back the burlap flap that served as a door and stood quaking on the threshold. He looked up in suprise from the counter as he was pouring a foul-looking brown liquid." This shows that he almost never sees her.
Calpurnia and her grandfather have not had a close relationship because she descried that he would sit in his labritory and do his work alone. But in the end of this chapter they had a bond of being and loving being natrulists. So now in the story I belive that their relationship is going to grow because of that bond.
I much agree with Shaina in the fact that at the end of the chapter they go into the library (in which Calpurnia had never been) and her grandfather gives her "The Origin Of Species" . I believe that this bond between Calpurnia and her grandfather will grow stronger as the book goes on.
I believe that Calpurnia has a mixed relationship with her grandfather. There are multiple times in the book that this id suggested such as, " Perhaps if I'd made Henry come with me, Grandfather would have accorded more attention."
