Chapter Nine

If Calpurnia is so dedicated to science and naturalism, why did she decide to release Petey rather than kill him for a specimen for her collection?  Please support your thinking with evidence from the text.

  1. I think that Calpurnia made the choice to release him instead of to kill him because, even though grandfather warned her not to name the test subjects, she did it anyways and since naming him, has gotten a connection with him, just as grandfather had had with the bat. I know this because it says in the text, " You did warn me not to name him. But I've raised him this far. I don't think I can kill him.

  2. I think she didn't kill Petey because she knew that he would live a much happier life (and actually have a life rather than just sitting in a case all day everyday) also Calpurnia knew that she didn't need him as a specimen.

  3. I think that she didn't want to kill because in the story she said that the reason that she didn't want to kill is that she has raised it and because of that (like Tyler said) she had a connection with it. She also couldn't kill it because she was going to hang it and if it was on the was it would probably brake her heart seeing it dead, on the wall like that.

  4. I think the reason Calpurnia didn't want to kill Petey was because she had named him and saw him as a pet, even though Grandfather said not to. She got so attached to Petey that she just couldn't bear to kill him, so she let him go so he could live a happier life in the wild where he belonged.

  5. Do you think this behavior will get in the way of Calpurnia's being a good naturalist?

  6. I think that Calpurnia didn't kill Petey for a speciman in her collection because she gave him a name and then she began to have a great connection with him.

    1. Sorry, I meant just a connection not a great connection.

  7. No I don't believe so.

  8. I don't think that it will affect her because she will probably have learned from this.

  9. I don't think so either. I think that she might hold on to it for part of a chapter but get back on her feet and get her head strait for the rest. I do not think that this will cause any problems in the story. I might be wrong and I might be right, I'll have to find out.

  10. I think that no matter how Calpurnia names her "pets" or cares for them will not change the fact that she will always love science.

  11. I agree with Sebastian because I think that she loves science but if she gives names to her pets than she has to let them go or have to bear killing them.
