Chapter Nineteen
On page 230, Calpurnia uses a metaphor that is repeated later. She mentions that cod liver oil (a common treatment for a variety of ailments in the 19th century) "held no healing powers for the mangled paw caught in the cruel caught in the cruel trap." What does this metaphor ("the mangled paw caught in the cruel caught in the cruel trap") mean in the context of Calpurnia's situation?

I think that she means that she is already in a bad situation with having to become a lady, and she is also so facing the sorrow of spending less time with her grandfather because she has to do such as sowing and cooking which she doesn't enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI think that Callie means that she has already been in a bad situation in the past which is the mangled paw, and now she is in a bad situation which makes the mangled paw in the trap, saying that the cod liver oil will not help her at all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tyler in the fact that she is already in a bad situation hence the coyote and the paw and the cod liver oil will not help.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Tyler. Calpurnia is saying that she's already in a bad situation and it has gotten worse, which is the coyote paw, and that not even cod liver oil will be able to help it heal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sebastian because the cod liver oil couldn't heal anything and therefore the wound would get worse.
