Chapter Nineteen

On page 233, before Granddaddy samples the batch of distilled pecan liquor, he says to Calpurnia, "To your good health, Calpurnia, my companion in sailing uncharted waters."  What do you think this metaphor ("my companion in sailing uncharted waters") means in this context?

On the next page (234), in explaining (from page 233) to Calpurnia "The lesson for today is this: It is better to travel with hope in one's heart than to arrive in safety," he says, "It means that we should celebrate today's failure because it is a clear sign that our voyage of discovery is not yet over.  The day the experiment succeeds is the day the experiment ends.  And I inevitably find that the sadness of ending outweighs the celebration of success."  How are these two quotes related and what did Granddaddy mean?  What was the message he tried to send to Calpurnia?

  1. I think that "my companion in sailing in uncharted waters" means that Callie is his match for doing things that nobody has every done or discovered before.

  2. The two quotes are related by both meaning the failure is the first step to success. But when you succeed the experiment is over and that you can feel the sadness of ending more than the happiness of success. And so I think that the message that he was trying to send to Callie is that she should never slack on perfecting her experiments.

  3. I think that the metaphor meant that Callie is granddaddy's partner in exploration through science. Granddaddy meant that they should be happy that their experiment failed because that means that they get to further explore their project. The message that he was trying to send to Callie was that failure can not only be a fail in the project, but also a success for their happiness because they get to continue work on the project.

  5. I think that companion sailing in uncharted waters means that they are exploring the unknown. These quotes are related because they are both saying that they need to keep on trying and if they fail keep on going with a smile on their faces.

  6. I think that "my companion in uncharted waters" means that they have discovered something new that nobody would ever be able to find out. I think that the two quotes mean that no matter how much they fail, they will always keep trying.
